People ask. We answer at about the temperature you would expect.
- Why twenty seven dollars?
- It seemed about right. Nobody argued. Twenty six felt low and twenty eight felt like we were trying, or whatever.
- What am I actually getting for $27?
- A name on a state form and a street address to go with it. Both exist. What goes on at the address is not really covered, or whatever.
- If a process server turns up, then what?
- Then a process server has turned up. Whether anyone is in when it happens is a coin flip we do not watch. The papers land wherever they land.
- Do you have an actual office?
- There is a room with our name near it. It has a door. Some afternoons the door is unlocked. We would not call that an office, but the state might.
- How big is your liability, realistically?
- Three months of fees. At $27 a year that is $6.75 if the trouble lands inside the first ninety days, and after that it is nothing, because you paid the whole year up front and the three months before day ninety one contain no fees. The $6.75 stays with us either way. It is not a lot. Neither are we.
- Can I get a person on the phone?
- There is a phone. It is on a desk. Whether a person is near the desk when it rings has not been consistent, or whatever.
- Does this roll over next year?
- No. When the year ends it just sort of stops. We do not send a note. Sending a note would be a second thing.
- Are there others? Cheaper, pricier, whatever?
- Twelve, if you want to count. We are at $27. It is the same nothing at every one of them. Ours is the lukewarm one, or whatever.
- How do I end it?
- You do not have to. It ends on its own, quietly, around the anniversary, without either of us noticing.
- Is any of this above board?
- Each state page pastes the statute about agents like us and what the state does about them. We put it there. Reading it is your side of the arrangement.
- Is this a company that exists?
- The price exists. The terms exist. The statutes on the state pages exist and so does what they describe. The service is the one part we left at room temperature.
- Why not just go with the ones who tried?
- The plural. They charge $37 and made an effort with the website. You can pay ten dollars for the effort if you want. It goes to the effort, not to you, or whatever.
- Will you tell me when the annual report is due?
- We will not know when it is due. The state page has the fee, which is the part that felt relevant, or whatever.
- What happens to mail that reaches you?
- It reaches us. That is roughly the end of its journey. Some of it is on a chair.
